Capwords Ai Language App Wins Apple Design Award

CapWords, an iOS application leveraging artificial intelligence for language learning, has been recognised with an Apple Design Award 2025 in the Delight and Fun category. The app facilitates vocabulary acquisition by enabling users to scan physical objects with their smartphone camera.

The application uses image recognition technology and generative AI to identify scanned items and produce digital flashcards. These flashcards display the object's name translated into one of ten supported languages, including English, Chinese, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, German, Italian, Russian, and Portuguese. Each flashcard also provides a contextual example sentence using the translated term and offers audio pronunciation.

Launched as CapWords: AI Snap Learn Langs with the subtitle "Photo translate & vocab cards," the app is available free of charge with optional in-app purchases. A premium subscription tier, priced at $2.99 per month, provides access to unlimited object scans, themed vocabulary sets, and interactive exercises. The application is distributed via the App Store.

The development and design of CapWords were acknowledged by Apple's Design Awards, which assess applications based on innovation, technical achievement, and design quality. The app’s approach integrates real-world interactions into a language learning framework, converting commonplace objects into learning materials. Functionality includes a "Snap & Learn" feature for immediate flashcard creation, "Smart Review" for spaced repetition based on user activity, "Everyday Explorer" for mobile translation and vocabulary capture during activities like shopping or travel, and a "Your Wordbook" feature for saving and reviewing scanned vocabulary. Example sentences are presented with accompanying audio playback.
